Maths skills book covers

New editions of Maths Skills for Living and Maths Skills for Working on the way in 2026!

It's been a few years since I've revisited Maths Skills for Living and Maths Skills for Working, published originally through Phoenix Education and now Five Senses Publishing. At the time, these books were unique in reaching 'that kid' in so many classes who needed something different. These were the students who took a little longer to grasp maths concepts, or who had experienced barriers to their learning like being away from school, disengaged, moving schools or having a learning difference.

Teachers of Life Skills Maths and Victorian Pathways Programs said to me that they needed content which suited the age and interests of their older students, but which was suited to their developing maths skills. They didn't want babyish content, primary workshets or activities that felt wrong for teens and young adults. Instead, they wanted life skills maths worksheets and activities about:

  • Train and bus timetables in their local community

  • Simple measurement tasks for cooking, travel, household chores and customer service

  • Money management skills for daily living and adult financial literacy

  • Practical daily living activities for teens, like making recreation plans

  • Using budgets, working with income and expenses and having a savings plan

  • Workplace maths skills like filling out a timesheet, recording data, using a roster or serving customers

So Maths Skills for Living and Maths Skills for Working were born. Now, many life skills maths classes have been run and won using these books, and it's time for a refresh. A new look, new content and activities designed for the AI and digital age. I'm loving working on a whole new manuscript, dipping back into just what made these books work years ago, and trying to make sure it shows the same respect for young people who do maths differently, their teachers and supporters.

If you've used and loved Maths Skills for Living and Maths Skills for Working with your students in life skills, pathways, transition or work readiness programs, keep an eye out for the new editions.

New Dyspraxia book featured in dysTinct magazine
Anne Vize article teaser from DISTINCT magazine

I was thrilled to have my article about dyspraxia and PE teaching accepted by DYSTINCT magazine. Experiencing the joy of being active and exploring sport, recreation and daily movement is just so important for children and young people! For kids who have dyspraxia, planning and organising their movements can be tricky, so a teacher who is aware and knows how to notice and adjust their teaching can make the world of difference.

Check out the full article in the July edition of DYSTINCT.

Author Spotlight on Essential Resources

It's always exciting to share ideas about early childhood and inclusive education, so I was thrilled recently to be included in the Author Spotlight with Essential Resources.

This was an opportunity to chat about all things inclusive education, and to pause and reflect on what motivates and excites me as an author and teacher. I shared my ideas about favourite books, memorable teaching moments and what excites me about the future of inclusion in ECEC.

Partnerships with families

It was exciting to see articles about Partnerships with Families of Children with Additional Needs being published on the Education HQ website for early years and primary teachers in Australia and New Zealand. This brand new title published by the team at Essential Resources has been written to help busy teachers find simple ways of working more effectively with families of children with additional needs - whether they are children with disability, children who have experienced trauma, or children who read, write or speak in languages different from their teacher and class mates.
